Smartphone Photography for Listings — Full Guide

Published for informational purposes. All tips apply to Kleinanzeigen, eBay.de, and Vinted listings.

Product photography setup

Step 1 — Natural Light Is Your Best Friend

Place your item near a large window during daytime. Avoid direct sunlight (it creates harsh shadows). Overcast days produce the most even, flattering light for product photos — no flash needed.

Choosing a Background

A plain, neutral background is almost always best. A light grey or white bedsheet on the floor works perfectly. Avoid patterned rugs, cluttered rooms, and coloured walls that distract from the item.

White or light grey surface

Makes items pop and looks clean in thumbnail previews.

Outdoor on overcast day

Soft natural light, no shadows. Great for furniture and garden items.

Busy carpet or floor

Distracts the eye and looks unprofessional in listing thumbnails.

How Many Photos to Include

  • Front view — the main hero shot, clean background
  • Back and sides — buyers want the full picture
  • Close-ups of any wear/defects — honesty builds trust
  • Label or serial number — especially for electronics
  • Accessories included — cables, manuals, original box

Pro tip

On Kleinanzeigen, listings with 5+ photos receive significantly more inquiries than listings with 1–2 photos. Take extra time with photos — it's the highest-impact action you can take.

Free Editing Apps (No Subscription)
